How to Care for Wool Sweaters

Tabla de Contenidos

Your favourite wool sweater fits just right. The sleeves, the softness, the way it sits on your shoulders—you want to keep all of it. Then wash day arrives. Can it go in the machine? Will it shrink? And where should you leave it to dry?

Caring for wool needn’t be complicated. A few simple habits can help preserve the fit and feel you love, from the first wash to the next winter.

Start with the care label, wash when needed, and support your sweater while it dries. Here’s how to make those steps part of everyday care.

Check the Care Label First

Before reaching for the detergent, check the instructions sewn into your sweater. Some wool garments allow machine washing and tumble drying; others require hand washing or professional cleaning.

The symbols below explain the main instructions you may encounter. Read them together: permission to machine wash does not automatically mean permission to tumble dry.

Care symbol Meaning What to do
Very mild wash symbol Very mild wash Use a gentle wool programme. The number gives the maximum temperature; two bars indicate very gentle treatment.
Hand wash symbol Hand wash Wash gently by hand, observing any stated temperature limit. Avoid rubbing, pulling or wringing.
Do not wash symbol Do not wash Do not hand wash or machine wash. Check the professional-cleaning instructions.
Do not bleach symbol Do not bleach Use a bleach-free detergent.
Do not tumble dry symbol Do not tumble dry Keep the sweater out of the tumble dryer.
Low-heat tumble dry symbol Low-heat tumble drying Use the permitted gentle, low-heat drying process.
Moderate ironing symbol Moderate ironing The two-dot symbol permits moderate heat. Use a damp pressing cloth and light pressure.
Professional dry cleaning symbol Professional dry cleaning The letter guides the cleaner’s solvent selection. It does not, by itself, mean “dry clean only.”

These examples help you interpret the label; they are not a single set of instructions for every wool sweater.

Care for Wool Sweaters Between Washes

A sweater doesn’t necessarily need washing after every wear. Wool naturally resists odours, so first check whether it needs cleaning or simply a little fresh air.

Lay it flat on a clean towel in an airy room to release everyday smells. Give it around 24 hours between wears when possible, allowing the fibres time to recover their shape. Empty pockets and remove heavy accessories before putting it away.

Deal with spills promptly. For washable wool, gently dab a small stain with a lint-free cloth and diluted wool detergent, rather than scrubbing. If the label prohibits washing, or the stain persists, ask a professional cleaner.

Wash when dirt or lingering odour calls for it, rather than following a fixed number of wears.

How to Wash Wool Sweaters

Prepare Your Sweater and Choose the Right Detergent

Separate light and dark colours, including while garments are wet. Turn the sweater inside out; a laundry bag can provide additional protection during machine washing.

Choose a mild, neutral detergent formulated for wool and follow its dosing instructions. Avoid heavy-duty products, enzyme-containing biological detergents, and both chlorine and oxygen bleach.

If you use powder, dissolve it fully before adding the sweater so concentrated particles do not settle on the fabric.

How to Hand Wash a Wool Sweater

  1. Prepare the water. Fill a clean basin with lukewarm water, approximately 30°C unless the label specifies otherwise. Mix in the wool detergent.
  2. Immerse gently. Let the sweater move freely in the water. Avoid rubbing, stretching or twisting.

Select the wool programme and check its temperature against the label. Some wool cycles run at 40°C, which is unsuitable if your sweater specifies a 30°C maximum. Without a wool programme, use a suitable cold or delicate cycle with gentle action.

Keep the load small. For a very mild wash, fill no more than one-third of the drum so the sweater has room to move. Add wool detergent and select the programme’s gentle settings.

If the label says “Dry Clean Only,” take the sweater to a professional cleaner instead of trying a gentler home wash.

How to Dry Wool Sweaters Without Losing Their Shape

A wet sweater needs support. Hanging it from the shoulders or over a clothesline can stretch the knit under its own weight.

After gently removing excess water, lay the sweater on a clean, pale, lint-free towel. Ease the body, sleeves and edges back into shape, smoothing out folds without pulling. A flat mesh drying rack is another option and allows air to circulate.

Leave it to dry naturally in the shade, away from radiators, direct heat and strong sunlight—including sunlight through a window. If shaping pins are needed, use rustproof ones.

Can wool sweaters go in the dryer? Only when the care label expressly allows it. Use the specified low-heat wool or delicate setting. A machine-washable sweater may still require flat drying.

How to Iron Wool Sweaters

Ironing a wool sweater through a pressing cloth

First, check whether ironing is necessary. Wool resists creasing, and a chunky sweater may need little more than careful reshaping.

If ironing is permitted:

  1. Match the heat to the label. Use the wool or moderate setting only when allowed; a lower stated limit takes priority.
  2. Lay the sweater flat. Arrange it gently into its natural shape.
  3. Use light moisture. A damp pressing cloth or permitted steam helps release creases.
  4. Press lightly. Heavy pressure can flatten the surface and leave shiny marks. Keep the iron moving rather than resting it on one spot.
  5. Let it settle. Leave the sweater flat for about five minutes before folding.

Avoid spray starch and spray-on softeners or conditioners, which can leave deposits. Never iron a garment labelled “Do not iron.”

How to Store Wool Sweaters

For everyday storage, fold sweaters gently into a drawer or onto a shelf. Before seasonal storage, clean them and allow them to dry completely.

Choose storage that suits the knit:

  • Breathable fabric bags: Useful for delicate sweaters. Tissue paper between garments can help prevent snagging.
  • Storage bins: Practical where space allows. Pack only dry garments; silica-gel sachets can help manage residual moisture.
  • Vacuum bags: Save space but restrict airflow and compress clothing. They are less suitable for delicate knits and can trap moisture.

Cedar blocks may be used as part of your storage routine, but continue checking for insects and dampness. Revisit stored sweaters occasionally, and check bag closures or seals rather than leaving everything untouched until next winter.

Wool Sweater Care FAQs

How Do You Remove Pills from a Wool Sweater?

Small balls of fibre form where the fabric rubs during wear, often around sleeves, underarms and the sides of the body.

Remove a few loose pills carefully by hand, or use a wool comb or fabric shaver gently on the dry sweater. Avoid catching the knitted stitches. Reducing repeated friction and washing inside out can help limit further pilling.

Can You Restore a Shrunken Wool Sweater?

It depends on what has happened to the fabric. Gentle reshaping may help a sweater that has changed shape slightly, but it cannot reliably reverse felting.
